Gov. Mimiko |
Ahead of the November 26 governorship election in Ondo
State, the indigenes of Owo town have appealed to the state governor, Dr.
Olusegun Mimiko, and the leaders of the All Progressives Congress to pick the
governorship candidates of their parties from the town.
The indigenes also lamented that the town had been
marginalised in the political affairs of the state since the return to
democracy in 1999.
This was contained in a letter jointly issued by the
Chairman, Owo General Assembly and Chief Akin Aruwajoye, and the secretary, Dr.
Monday Duromola, after a meeting with the indigenes of the town on Saturday.
The letter, a copy of which was made available to our
correspondent on Sunday, was sent to the state governor and the state and
national leaders of the APC.
The indigenes also said they had put in place strategic
measures to reduce the number of the governorship aspirants from the town to
three.
Currently, the governorship aspirants from Owo contesting on
the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and the APC are nine. There are
seven from the APC while only two are eyeing the ticket on the platform of the
PDP.
In the letter, the indigenes said, “Consider the recent
trend of rotation of the office of governor of the present Ondo State amongst
the three senatorial zones. The late Chief Adebayo Adefarati from Akoko
South-West in the northern senatorial district was the governor between 1999
and 2003.
“The late Olusegun Agagu from Okitipupa Local Government in
the southern senatorial district ruled the state from 2003 to 2009 and Olusegun
Mimiko from Ondo town in the central senatorial district started ruling from 2009
and will end his tenure by 2017.
“It means that the rotation of governorship has gone full
circle round the three senatorial districts and it should naturally come back
to the northern senatorial district.”
